Mastodon will release Marrow Deep on August 28 through Loma Vista Recordings, the band announced Monday alongside a new single, "Snakes for Dinner," featuring Josh Homme. It is their first album in five years, and the first they have finished without Brent Hinds, who left the band in March 2025 and died in a motorcycle accident that August.

The record is also the first to document what Mastodon looks like now: a five-piece. Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor are joined by guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira, both appearing on a full Mastodon LP for the first time.

What "Snakes for Dinner" actually sounds like

Homme shows up in the last minute of the song, and he is used the way a guest should be used, as a change in weather rather than a cameo bolted onto the chorus. Before he arrives the track works the seam Mastodon have owned since Blood Mountain: Dailor's fills refusing to sit still under a riff that keeps folding back on itself, Sanders and Kelliher trading the low end. Nogueira's keys are the new information here, sitting under the mix and giving the song a floor that Hushed and Grim mostly did without.

Homme's last Mastodon credit was "Colony of Birchmen" on Blood Mountain in 2006. Twenty years is a long time to hold a callback, and the band clearly knew what they were doing by cashing it now, on the first single that has to convince anybody this lineup is a band and not a continuation.

The album's other released track, "Your Ghost Again," came out in June as a tribute to Hinds. It is sequenced third, directly ahead of "Snakes for Dinner," which puts the grief and the reintroduction back to back.

The record

Marrow Deep was co-produced by the band with Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (Converge, High on Fire), and mixed by Andrew Scheps. Berger and Ballou is an odd pairing on paper, pop architecture next to the loudest hardcore engineer working, and it suggests Mastodon are not trying to make Hushed and Grim II.

Per the label, the album takes the Three Fates of Greek mythology as its frame, working through loss and destiny across twelve tracks. Sanders, in the announcement: "It's reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we're united, and excited to get to work."
